>Kevin Roose: The theory that I heard attached to this was that you are secretly an accelerationist, a person who wants A.I. to go as fast as possible, and that all this careful diplomacy that you’re doing and asking for regulation — this is really just the sort of polite face that you put on for society. But deep down you just think we should go all gas, no brakes toward the future.
>Sam Altman: No, I certainly don’t think all gas, no brakes toward the future.
Oh great, what a relief :^)
Very reassuring from the guy who got fired for lack of candor
Now I believe him :)
This interview itself was done last week right, before the drama this weekend? But published today.
But he seems to be addressing the rift when he explains his velocity. Let me put it this way, does this sound like an independent CEO of OpenAi, or does this sound like Sataya Nadella saying “let’s stick this shit in Cortona, Xbox, the windows task bar, fucking everrrything”.
Yeah, sounds like the CEO of a totally different company.
I would not be shocked to see some kinda legal action against Altman for stealing trade secrets going forward.
looks that way to me too
This post title shouldn't say "11/20/23" which implies the interview was today. It was done last Wednesday 11/15.

Every time I visit an archive.today link from HN I get stuck in a weird pseudo-CloudFlare/ReCaptcha “prove you are human” page, and every time I click “I am human” the page reloads. Are these real?

> Sam Altman: I believe that this will be the most important and beneficial technology humanity has yet invented. And I also believe that if we’re not careful about it, it can be quite disastrous. And so we have to navigate it carefully.
Nice, what is that, only 25% chance we all encounter destruction instead? Everyone else want on this train? Oh, that's right, we don't have a choice, it's up to them.
Technology only moves forward, you never have a choice about that. The choice is either to embrace it or not. At least OpenAI is building this under public scrutiny. How many firms or governments are building the same thing in the shadows? Hint: more than zero.
Isn’t it just their rehashing from reading Hacker News followed by interview with Altman from long ago (early last week)?
If it was last week, I’d still read between the lines. All this is news to us, but it wasn’t a secret to them last week.
Four days later this continues and all the parties involved are intelligent professional adults?
Personally after four days of this middle to High school b.s. they all coming off as a bunch whiney ego maniac morons
Can anyone name another company backed by billions that has acted like this before and how will they continue to act as an organization..answer they should all go there separate ways! Morons! This is a ship show and all their employees can't see this? They are hypnotize by these morons (in their behavior and actions) tech stardust? Awesome product but the ppl behind it omg!!
Most likely someone with lots of money is behind this ..Altman if he has any self respect for himself the best way forward is to take all the employees to work with him under Microsoft. Stop flailing back n forth it's making u look moronic..a lack of self respect(a leader has to bE respected). The big money person behind all of this needs their ass handed to them via Altman taking all the employees to Microsoft except those on the board who allowed this. They spit on Altman and any leader should immediately scorch the ground of those behind it ...leave them In the dust!
I thought Elon's takeover of Twitter was a mess... but now OpenAI is taking it to a whole new level.
Hypothesis: excessive hype + tens of billions of dollars at stake = even supposedly intelligent people are prone to lose their shit.
...are you still been unable to realize that it was really just a politically motivated firing?
The example of "lack of candor" that Ilya provided was "Altman was said to have given two people at OpenAI the same project."
Hilarious how Hacker News is unable to understand that Ilya was just trying to grab power.
Ilya has is own pocketbook to worry about. The independent board members have a duty to the non-profit’s vision, mission, and ethical bounds. M$ needs how many board members to flip positions in order to put their ROI before all of that?
If I were an employee at OpenAI now, I wouldn’t be particularly impressed with the rest of the board’s candor either.
By that logic you can fire absolutely anyone at any time. No malfeasance, nothing illegal, nothing harmful, but they were like... totally planning to do something in the future despite saying otherwise! Boom, lack of candor!
Let's be serious. Because this board isn't.
Note I'm not "team Sam Altman". As most startup/yuppee CEOs, he's extroverted, superficially charming, but can be manipulative and use people as pawns in a game. All the traits unfortunately needed to attract talent and capital. Without these kinds of people, most companies wouldn't exist.
However there are different shades of gray. He's also a smart CEO who clearly led the company to success, saving it after assured bankruptcy when Elon Musk fled, and understands the product and his team. Alas, he didn't understand his board.
archive.xxx wants your rough geolocation for 'reasons' (picking a server for your reply has been given) Cloudflare DNS referrals strip this (for your privacy says Cloudflare)
Screw you Cloudflare, says archive.xxx, we will penalise your referrals.
This has been the real ongoing result of using Cloudflares 1.1.1.1 DNS resolver for 12 months or more now.
I figured out how to fix this in Firefox
Settings | Privacy & Security | DNS over HTTPS | Increased Protection | Choose Provider | NextDNS
I experienced this recently as well on archive.is / archive.ph.
thanks, i really enjoyed watching it
How much value has Twitter lost due to moronic behavior... Microsoft's stock could take a hit from all the and continued flailing.
A board can be power hungry as well.
Thanks for this! It’s been bugging me for weeks
Try NextDNS all the time, on all your devices... it's fantastic!
